The laboratories of Basra University are subject to control over the use of toxic substances, whether they are chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear, and the university has strict procedures for dealing with their waste. Whereas, all toxic substances are registered with the Department of Chemical, Bacterial, Radiological and Nuclear Consequences (CBRN) in the Directorate of Civil Defence
The Department of Pathological Analysis at the College of Science at the University of Basrah organised an online scientific lecture on how to manage biological risks and waste. The lecture aims to identify the meaning of danger, the meaning of danger, and the sources and types of biological waste. The lecture, which was given by Rawaa Zahid Jafat from the Department of Medical Physiology at Hilla University College, included identifying the types of waste from health institutions, identifying the stages of safe waste management, methods of biological waste disposal, the stages of destroying medical metal waste by steam, how to manage risks, and how to manage biological waste. The lecture called for how to manage waste, conduct a survey and drawings for waste management, and prepare recommendations for improving the system, the responsibility and duties of employees, training needs, and equipment.

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science /University of Basrah organized a scientific symposium at the University of Basra on the occasion of World Environment Day, in which a lecture was given on sustainable waste management by Dr. Laila Saleh Al-Omran. The lecture aims to shed light on the issue of waste management as a culture and methodology to achieve sustainability, which represents one of the most important principles of green chemistry. The lecture included four main themes, namely the definition of waste, waste classification, some problems arising from waste, and waste management. It was emphasized in detail about the issue of waste management, which is represented by following the hierarchy, which starts from waste prevention, waste minimization, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and finally waste disposal.
