Basrah is considered as one of the largest governorates in Iraq where it has a population of more than 4,700,000 people according to the 2014 census, which represents 13% of the population of Iraq. The governorate has three public universities: The University of Basrah, Southern technical university, and the University of Basrah for oil and gas. The University of Basrah is considered the mother university of both other universities due to its antiquity and heritage that made it distinguished by various specializations. The University of Basrah has 21 colleges for undergraduate studies and a college of graduated .
